Research image for video lecture performance in development

In 1985 Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta fatally fell from the 34th floor of the apartment she shared with her partner, artist Carl Andre. Although Andre was ultimately acquitted of her murder, the circumstances of what occurred remain unknown. Taking this case as a starting point, Vertical Cut is a video lecture performance that traces the lines of force that deform the perceived value and meaning of the art object as it moves through time.

Drawing together vectors such as Mendieta's land-body artwork, critical writings on minimalism, psychoanalytic film theory, Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), Alain Resnais' L'Année dernière à Marienbad (1961) and the texts of Robert Smithson and George Kubler, this video lecture will investigate the geometries of time that shape the history of things. This project is currently in development.
