1) WHAT’S WITH THE NAME SODA_JERK?

The choice of Soda_Jerk as a pseudonym has a couple of rationales. "Soda Jerk" is a 1950’s term for the employee who mixed ice cream sodas in milkbars. As remix artists who take elements of culture and mix them together we liked this association, as well as the slippage between "pop culture" and "soda pop" as key ingredients in the mix. But the thing that intrigues us about the term is the way that the original meaning breaks down in an Australian context. As ‘soda jerk’ is an outdated American term, most Australians are unfamiliar with its meaning. Separated from its cause, the term "jerk" in particular takes on new associations (whereas in its original context "jerk" comes from the action of pulling the soda stream lever). Those unaware of the term's origins also sometimes assume that two random words have been joined together (soda + jerk). This is an assumption we decided to foreground by using the underscore to visually join the words. This action of joining existing elements together to generate new meanings once again reminds us of the formal action of remixing itself.

And/ Or:

One day (around the time of our first exhibition) we were op shopping and excavated a vintage 1950's milk bar uniform with "Soda Jerk" embroidered on the pocket under a picture of a milkshake.

2) WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO MOVE ON TO SHOOTING YOUR OWN FOOTAGE FOR YOUR VIDEO ART?

We’re not, so please stop asking. Despite popular opinion, remixing video is not like wearing training wheels while you are learning to ride your bike. We have no intention of making original footage video works, we are remix artists and that means we re-mix.
